Dear Fellow Supervisors and Salaried Employees,

I’d wager that most of us were put in leadership positions for a combination of reasons: our expertise, work ethic, and ability to get along with others. Chances are good that when we first stepped into our leadership roles, we knew that having hard, uncomfortable conversations was something we might one day have, but we also hoped that day was long on the horizon.

If you dread the discomfort of telling a person they are not meeting expectations, that their job is on the line, that they are not the fit you hoped they would be, you are not alone. These are the conversations that can keep a leader up at night, dominating your thoughts and creating doubt as you question your role in the events leading up to these potentially painful talks. Too often, these conversations are avoided. The outcome is more sleepless nights, frustrated teammates, and perhaps even your leadership skills being called into question (usually behind your back). While a tough conversation is hard, the consequences of avoiding them is even harder. This is one of the most undesirable tasks that a leader has to manage, but it's also an important one to master for the sake of employee performance and productivity and the wellbeing of your team.

Hence, you'll see that this week's Long View rebrands these conversations from "hard" to "courageous." Every time a leader chooses bravery over easy and leans into the awkwardness of having uncomfortable conversations or prioritizes their team’s health over the bad behavior of one individual, they are acting with courage. As leaders, one of the greatest gifts we can give our employees is ongoing feedback, both positive and corrective. And although it may seem hard to believe at first, the more frequently you give feedback, the easier these difficult conversations become.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WINTER-- Seeking Feedback

COMPANY CALENDAR
We are looking at creating One Calendar To Rule Them All-- or, an outlook calendar where our salaried folks can all see events ranging from public events to departmental meetings to employee events like Town Halls and MIMs. The purpose would be to make it easy to figure out what's going on where across the resort, and if you needed to schedule a meeting yourself or stop by another department's meeting (break down those silos, folks!), you could contact them for more information. We're looking for feedback and ideas on this topic-- if you've got them, please share!

THEY SAID WHAT?
Remember when you started at ASC and someone said something like, "you could check the portal, or you could go down to the treehouse near the GTO and ask an S3 coordinator about the ARTUP on the AspenCard," and you thought, whaaat? Yeah. We're creating a dictionary for our newbies to get the hang of our lingo. Send us the words and phrases that tripped you up when you were new or what you'd like to see included, and we'll make sure it doesn't happen to someone else. Research tells us that the faster our new hires develop a sense of belonging, the more likely it is that they'll want to stay.

HELP IT MOUNTAIN DESK: TAKE THE STRAW POLL

If you manage front line or call center workers, please have them take a moment and fill out this important straw poll for the IT Mountain Help Desk to help ascertain how best they can assist with technology needs, especially when front line workers are with guests. If you don't but would like to weigh in, please do so as well.

JULY 14: MICROHYDROELECTRIC TOUR IN SNOWMASS WITH SUSTAINABILITY
If you or your employees are heading to the Snowmass Concert this Thursday, stop by a little early and get a tour of the awesome microhydroelectric plant as well. Meet Sustainability Intern Daniel Sherry at the top of the Skittles lift at 5pm and walk up to the facility 10 minutes above the concert venue while learning more about our clean energy initiatives. Spread the word, bring your friends! It's open to the public.

WILDFIRE RISK: Despite the recent moisture, the threat of wildfire remains. Please reiterate with your teams not only the importance of their own good habits regarding fire safety but also that they need to keep an eye out for the bad habits of our guests. See this PSA regarding an incident on Aspen Mountain this week.

COVID: Free PCP Covid testing options have changed. Please review the Employee Portal Covid page for updates, a list of symptoms, and directions on what to do if sick. More info was also recently in the Aspen Times here as well.

UPDATE YOUR PHONES, EMAIL, PROFILE

ASC LANDLINE PHONES: All landline phones within the company that have digital displays can now be updated to display the new logo. All you need to do is unplug your phone and plug it back in. Shops or locations where customers might view the display are highly encouraged to take this step.

EMAIL SIGNATURES: Are you new and need to create an email signature? Here are the directions. Did you get a promotion and need to update your title? Follow the same directions so that the formatting sticks no matter what type of inbox it lands in. (If you're outside the parent company and don't use a company desktop, the OWA/Office365 option has easier directions than the desktop directions).

UPDATE YOUR OUTLOOK PROFILE. If you need to update your job title in Outlook, contact [email protected] to change your job title. They can also update other information as well. Want to add a photo or add your LinkedIn account? You can do this yourself here.

RFOV: Looking for a teambuilding activity? Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers has a big upcoming project in Coal Basin on July 24. Volunteers will help plant native grasses and shrubs to improve habitat and the health of the landscape. Learn more here.
