THE LONG VIEW

For Supervisors & Salaried Employees
July 27, 2022

Dear Fellow Supervisors and Salaried Employees,

All advancements left unchecked can become problematic. In this Long View, we take a hard look at the reality we now face after over 20 years of email capability. Today over 333 billion emails are sent daily, and can account for 28% of our daily work time. Email is the 24/7 go-to for most corporate communications nowadays, making it hard to disconnect and be fully present for those we love, manage our inboxes and challenge our ability to use our time efficiently. It also increasingly detaches us from face-to-face conversations. Email is effective, and equally ineffective.

We do not have all the answers; communication is too complex to think there is a magic cure-all. We do, however, have suggestions that address how to think about email, ensure your email is read, and tips and tricks to improve how you use this tool. We also interviewed Revenue Manager Joanna Tenbrook, who shares her strategies for taming the email beast.

A special thanks to Caroline Heivly, Max Olson, and Elli McKinley for adding their insight.

Thank you,
Susan Harig
Director of Engagement & Development, Human Resources

PS – I recognize the irony of sending an email with advice on managing your email.
