Dear Fellow Supervisors and Salaried Employees,

Much of this Long View is dedicated to increasing awareness and guidance around next week’s engagement survey.

Preparing for a big engagement survey fresh from announcing the pulse survey results may seem odd. In a seasonal business, however, things can feel condensed. We have created an empowering culture where employees expect to be heard. It is one of our greatest differentiators and something that makes us unique. The war for talent continues in this climate with many headwinds. Understanding our employees’ wishes allows us to prioritize resources around what we can do more effectively and how we can compassionately communicate what we cannot.

Please encourage your employees to continue giving us feedback when the survey launches next Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Thank you,
Susan Harig
Managing Director of Engagement & Development, Human Resources

ENGAGEMENT SURVEY TIME | Feb. 1 Launch

The annual employee engagement survey runs February 1-15. Last year we had a 70% completion rate. We're shooting for 100% but will settle for 80% this year. We can't get there without your help in encouraging your staff to take the survey. How you can help:

  • Talk it up with your employees. Don't wait until the survey opens. Go over the pulse survey results and share why their voice matters. See the manager's guide below for some examples of changes made due to employee feedback over the past year and talk about the changes you made as a result of the data as well.
  • Peruse the Managers' Guide to the Employee Engagement Survey to help you think about the survey, survey data and next steps around goal setting.
  • Learn (or refresh yourself) on how to use your managers' dashboard. If you have five or more employees, you'll have access to a dashboard starting Feb. 8 that shows you what the anonymous feedback for your department is. If you have less that 5, your data will roll up to the manager above you. See below for open Zoom sessions to refresh yourself on how to read and use your dashboard or just ask some questions. If you're new or need a refresher, plan on attending one.
  • On Feb. 1, Remind Your Employees to Check Email. When the survey launches on Feb. 1, employees will get the link to the survey via email. They'll continue to get an email reminder until they complete it-- continue to remind them as well. You will receive an email from Qualtrics on Feb. 8 so you can see your dashboard and completion rates. If you have any questions, contact Susan Harig or Paul Bowman.
Dashboard Training Sessions. Swing by any of these sessions to get questions answered or refresh yourself on how to use the engagement survey data and dashboard.
Information on the Engagement Survey will be housed on the Employee Portal here and also accessed via the Supervisor Portal front page.

PULSE SURVEY RESULTS
Salaried managers with five or more employees should have received an email last Friday with their pulse survey results. If you did not, please speak to your manager or contact [email protected].

LEADERSHIP SKILLS: NEW COURSES AVAILABLE!

Understanding and overcoming emotional triggers. Feb. 8, 1-2:30pm
before you can lead others, you must lead yourself. This workshop, co-facilitated by SVP of Mountain Ops, Katie Ertl and Susan Harig, Managing Director of Engagement & Development, will consist of a discussion around identifying triggers that get in the way of having productive conversations. ABC 117 Large Conference Room (we encourage in-person attendance but will send a zoom link to anyone who rsvps).
Sign up on the Bullwheel here.

Navigating Difficult Employee Conversations (Feb. 22 OR 23)
There is no way around it: if you manage employees, you will have conversations out of your comfort zone. This session will identify common challenges managers face when building cultures of care and accountability and provide guidance on how to communicate with clarity and compassion to achieve the desired results. Two sessions: Choose one. Feb. 22 (9-10:30am Riverside Basalt Office) or Feb 23, 3:30-5:pm (ABC 117 Conference Room). We encourage in-person attendance but will send a zoom link to anyone who rsvps. Sign up for either session on the Bullwheel here.

Leadership Food for Thought: Are you an "accidental diminisher?"
Sometimes the very actions we take to support our team can actually prevent them from thriving. There are 6 ways you can accidentally diminish your team. Learn more here.

The Leaders' Playbook: We've added a few more resources, including an article on how to self-assess as a leader (in Model the Values> Go Deeper) and what it means to have courage as a leader podcast (in the Care & Accountability> Go Deeper). The Leaders' Playbook

FUN FACT: Do you say "um" and "ah" and "like" a lot when you talk? Don't know? Next time you're in a Teams meeting, go to "...More" at the top. Under "Language and Speech," choose "Turn on Speaker Coach." It will provide you with some insights on your meeting language style after the meeting is ended.

HR NEWS

W2s are now available on Kronos! Please let your employees know they can access their W2 by logging into Kronos, going to Self Serve> My Account> W2s. Hard copies were mailed on Jan. 23 to the mailing address in Kronos. If a terminated employee calls you: They need to use this link to access their W2 because they no longer have access through SSO. They should use their Employee ID number as the username and the password they used when they completed their onboarding paperwork. If they don't remember it, they can choose Forgot Your Password and reset it. Call your HR rep with questions.

COVID PAY RULES CLARIFIED. If your employee gets Covid, please reach out to your HR Manager or Andrew Joy. Employees may be eligible for up to 40 hours of Covid sick pay that they can use before they use up their sick pay benefits. If they get Covid a second time, however, they do not get another 40 hours. Reach out to Andrew Joy with questions.

RECOGNITION CARD UPDATE. All divisions were sent some Recognition cards last week. Please cycle those down to managers and supervisors to give out to employees. Thank you!

QUICK REMINDERS FOR EMPLOYEES:

  • It's around the mid-season point and a good time to wash the uniform.
  • While in uniform, all employees should be courteous to each other, even those in different color coats, as well as guests. They're all representing ASC when in uniform.
  • Our RFTA buses are crowded these days! Please do your best to make room for everyone when seats are limited.
  • Managers, when you need to address an issue with an employee, don't forget to talk about the behavior and not the person.
  • If you have a new salaried manager, they won't get the Long View or MIM invitations unless we add them to the list. Please email [email protected] to do so.

HELP YOUR EMPLOYEES STAY & GROW

SUMMER JOBS POSTINGS. All on-mountain summer jobs will be posted to Smart Recruiters by Feb. 20, while some hospitality positions may be posted even earlier in Feb. Let your employees know now! Winter positions will remain open until the last week of March.

CAREER GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES: Believe it or not, the time is coming for employees to begin to consider what happens after ski season. What are their plans? It's never too early to ask. ASC encourages employees to find the right fit-- whether that means laterally, to a different department, or vertically for a promotion. Either way, ASC offers plenty of ways for them to learn more and improve their skills. Be sure to let them know about:
  • The BullWheel, where they can take free courses in a variety of personal growth topics.
  • The Leaders Playbook. Yes, anyone can read it! If you're thinking of promoting someone to a supervisor position, this is a great place to start their training.
  • The The Long View. Once they're salaried and a manager, they need to reach out to [email protected] to get on this list for MIMs and Long Views. We also offer lots of manager information here. They can even start reading it on the Employee Portal Supervisor tab if they'd like.
  • Smart Recruiters. If they'd like to stay but you don't have a spot for them, encourage them to check out the Smart Recruiters internal site with all jobs available.
  • Mentorship and the Navigator Program. The list of mentors is here.
