CO 82 Aspen Roundabout Project

Project Complete!

Crews completed the final phase of concrete paving in the roundabout this past week as well as punch list items and the roundabout is now fully functional. We’d like to thank the tremendous partnerships that aided in getting these improved operational and safety features completed on the roundabout: City of Aspen, Pitkin County, RFTA, Federal Highways Administration and the Elected Officials Transportation Commission.
The McLain Flats detour will no longer be activated. Traffic control will be picked up and flaggers will no longer be at auxiliary road intersections. The project team will be off the project in observance of the Fourth of July holiday returning on Tuesday, July 5.

Work on the CO 82 corridor continues through the early fall months. After July 23, the deck replacement on the Maroon Creek bridge commences. Asphalt paving from the Aspen Airport Business Center to Castle Creek Bridge is scheduled to begin in late August. And after the Labor Day weekend, reconstruction of the bridge joint on Castle Creek bridge will commence.
Project-wide guardrail removal & replacement will start up again on July 5.

Traffic Impacts

Commuters and visitors are encouraged to ride RFTA, either from the communities in which they live, or from the Brush Creek Park and Ride. Bus service from the Brush Creek Park and Ride into Aspen or Snowmass is free. Parking at the Brush Creek Park and Ride lot is also free. Information about RFTA bus service can be found at www.rfta.com.

Anticipated Traffic Impacts:

  • Work on the Maroon Creek Bridge continues with the phase 2 lane configuration currently in place. Due to weather delays last week, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) paving on the bridge has been rescheduled for this week. Traffic will be shifted to the phase 3 lane configuration this week following paving. Please be aware of the lane shift and slow down for worker safety.
  • Work continues this week on the project-wide guardrail removal & replacement.
  • At the roundabout, resetting signs with permanent posts and bases will resume this week. This work will take place outside the roadway area and will not impact the flow of traffic, but CDOT would like to remind drivers to be aware of workers in the area.
  • New light standards are expected to be installed the week of August 15 and irrigation and topsoil will be placed in late August or September.
  • Drivers should be aware of the potential for closures in Glenwood Canyon, on I-70. If a Flash Flood Warning is issued by NWS, CDOT will immediately close I-70 in Glenwood Canyon. Drivers on CO 82 should be aware of the potential for increased traffic through the CO 82 corridor during these types of closures.
  • Asphalt paving from the Aspen Airport Business Center to Castle Creek Bridge is scheduled to begin in late August. And after the Labor Day weekend, reconstruction of the bridge joint on Castle Creek bridge will commence.
