THE LONG VIEW

For Supervisors & Salaried Employees
March 16, 2022

Dear Fellow Supervisors and Salaried Employees,

In our company, there is an ongoing tension between our harried day-to-day operational busy-ness and our desire for the space to listen, thoughtfully reflect, and build upon our best practices. In an effort to continue refining our understanding of employee concerns, we will launch a brief pulse survey later today specifically on the “I am involved in decisions that affect me” question on the engagement survey. Always in our bottom five, this survey question has not budged or improved, which is why we are tackling it vigorously. There will not be multiple reminders to take the survey this time (maybe a couple). We will keep the survey open till the end of March, and commit to sharing the results with you ASAP.

My hope is that this does not feel like a time suck away or distraction from your operation. Rather, our intention is to solve a company-wide problem that needs concerted effort to address. Our season will end soon, and then we will have the information we need to take action to address this longstanding pain point over the summer months.

We ask a lot, and this survey may ask a little bit more. Thank you for your commitment to continuously improving our employees’ experiences.

Thank you!
Susan Harig
Director of Engagement & Development, Human Resources

HR UPDATE:

OPEN ENROLLMENT | April 18-May 3
Please let your employees know that if they qualify for benefits, they need to re-enroll during the Open Enrollment period April 18-May 3 (no late exceptions this year). This open enrollment period is to choose all benefits, not just medical. Employees also need to complete a wellness exam by June 1st (yes, this date changed) or have scheduled one by this date in order to qualify for Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) funds. The purpose of this requirement is to help prevent illness and disease and catch under-the-radar health issues. When caught early, there is a better chance for recovery, which can prolong life, reduce healthcare costs, and prevent disability or death.

OPEN ENROLLMENT HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR APRIL 18-19
All employees, regardless of benefit status, are invited to attend. This 2-day fair features everything from the chance to talk to our benefits vendors and take seminars on topics like financial planning and mental wellbeing to sampling cuisine from around the world to $12,000 in raffle prizes and bloodwork and skin checks. Most important are the Open Enrollment sessions-- all employees with benefits are expected to attend one. There are exciting changes coming to your benefits package, so you'll want to attend to learn more! More details to come.

INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS NEWS

There's an important new component to the all-employee Monday newsletter for front line supervisors. You'll now see a link to the ASC News Brief. This is a one-pager with only the latest news and upcoming events-- please print and hang it up in your break rooms and locker rooms. Employees can use the QR code on the flyer to view the full newsletter on their phone. (Reminder: if they are not logged into the portal when they click on a portal link in the newsletter, they will not be able to access the portal content until they log in).

UNIFORM RETURN INFORMATION

Please print and post this flyer with uniform return information where your employees can see it. Information, including the uniform return form, is on the employee portal here as well.

MFA IS COMING TO BENEFITS PORTAL | March 17

Empyrean, the employee benefits portal, will roll over to requiring multifactor authentication (MFA) at 2pm on March 17. Employees who have already enrolled in MFA will simply need to authenticate when they go to the site. Employees who have not enrolled will be required to enroll to access the site. Once they enroll, they'll have access to both Empyrean and the employee portal. More information and directions are here. We will send out an email reminder to employees today at 5pm.

Coming soon... Our Zoom accounts will be rolling over to requiring MFA shortly as well. A letter will go out as soon as we have this rollover date confirmed.

HAVE EXTRA 75th HATS? PLEASE RETURN!

If you have extra 75th anniversary hats/pins/cards, please return your surplus via interoffice mail to Allison Johnson, HR Office, Highlands. We're running low and need to fill in some unintended gaps. All employees should have received a hat, pin, and card from Mike Kaplan. If you know of someone who did not, please let us know. Thank you!

Can't make an in-person training?

If an in-person training isn't in the works for you, try the "How to Avoid Burnout" course on the BullWheel, listed under Mental Wellness. Additionally, here are some appreciation exercises from Guest Experience Manager Katriona Hembury, who can also help you develop a plan to see your team through the next few weeks. Additional Burnout Resource for your employees in English and Spanish.

Since 66% to 76% of people leave their jobs if they don’t feel appreciated, ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I only provide Recognition by talking about the work and performance of team members?
  • Do I actively provide Appreciation by talking about the person?
  • When did I last do these things in a specific, meaningful way, with each member of my team?
Since people are 43% more effective and productive when they feel value and cared for, make a plan:
  • Write a recognition and appreciation statement for each member of your team. Even if you just told them something this morning, NO-ONE is immune to the positive effects of more sincere, meaningful appreciation and recognition
    • Speak with each person this week and tell them this. Ensure there are no distractions. Look them in the eye and be sincere. If they resist hearing this, simply advise “You don’t need to say anything except ‘Thank You’ when I’ve finished”
Additional Team Exercise ideas: Share the importance of recognition and appreciation with the team. Ask them to write recognition and appreciation statements for each of their peers and share them. Time spent now will help strengthen your next season. THIS is how we LEAD WITH ACTION!
